First Ivanka Trump was meeting with Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, and tweeting her support for equal pay and her LGBTQ “friends,” making everyone think she could be the rare liberal crusader embedded in the Trump White House. When that didn’t work out (not even a little bit), she basically told us we were all insane for expecting her, as a presidential adviser, to actually advise the president. In June, she declared that Washington, D.C., was a terribly vicious place (hilarious considering her father issues taunts and threats on a daily basis and recently picked a fight with a grieving gold star widow), and soon after, said that despite her inherently political job, she’d be staying out of politics henceforth.
Evidently, that was just a passing fancy (like that famous “punk phase” of hers), because this week, Ivanka Trump returned to stump for the very political issue of her father’s tax plan. (With climate change, LGBTQ rights, and equal pay in the rearview mirror, taxes are Ivanka’s flavor of the month.) Like most Republican tax plans, it contains plum cuts that will benefit corporations and the top one percent, but that is but a minor detail for Ivanka, a longtime expert at, to quote noted modern philosopher Sarah Palin, putting lipstick on a pig. Kind of like that time she told reporters and prospective buyers that the Trump SoHo was 60 percent sold when, in fact, it was barely 15 percent sold and was eventually foreclosed on. If anyone can sell corporate tax cuts and a repeal of the estate tax (a perk largely for the wealthy) as some sort of roundabout boon for average Americans, it’s Ivanka!
Indeed her fine bullshit artistry was on full display at a town hall in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on Monday, where she touted the Trump tax plan as “squarely targeted at creating jobs, creating growth, and offering relief to our middle-income families.” She kept up the jig in a Fox News sit-down with her fellow advocate for women’s empowerment Sean Hannity. “I believe with my heart and soul, and my father does, and this administration does, that no one can best the American worker,” Ivanka said in her signature earnest whisper. The only problem with this statement is that it’s not so much true as it is a complete lie: Ivanka’s clothing line isn’t made in America (many of her shoes are made in Chinese factories with reportedly horrible conditions) and neither are her father’s Donald J. Trump ties. Former fans have risen up to boycott Ivanka’s line . . . maybe they should do the same with her dad’s tax plan? Because if Ivanka’s the one selling it, people should probably think twice about the quality of the product.
