Tiffany Trump, the president’s fourth child, attended the 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival in the South of France with her boyfriend over the weekend. That means US taxpayers are now on the hook for at least $20,000 in hotel bills.
The two were “all smiles” as paparazzi spotted them at the five-star Hotel Barrière Le Majestic on the French Riviera, the Daily Mail reported. As is true with all of the president’s five adult children, her latest trip also comes with a charge for a Secret Service detail.
A Department of State purchase order reviewed by Quartz shows a $19,213 expenditure labeled, “USSS HOTEL ROOMS MARRIOTT – TIFFANY TRUMP’S VISIT TO CANNES 17-20 MAY 2019,” indicating a three-night weekend stay at the Marriott Jesta Fontainebleau for the presidential daughter’s security team.
The Jesta Fontainebleau is located a short walk from Le Majestic.
The State Department and the Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment. A Secret Service spokesperson, Julia McMurray, told Quartz: “For operational security reasons, the Secret Service cannot discuss specifically nor in general terms the means, methods, resources, costs, or numbers we utilize to carry out our protective responsibilities.”
In March, Tiffany Trump and her boyfriend, Michael Boulos, traveled to Serbia—a trip that cost US taxpayers $23,000 in lodging bills for the Secret Service. In 2017, the pair traveled to Budapest. That one cost US taxpayers about $22,000.
Before the Serbian getaway, the State Department described Tiffany Trump in an acquisitions document as a “Senior High Level USG VIP traveling with a delegation inclusive of support elements in: Security, Logistics, Communications, Logistics and Operations.”
None of these trips were for official government business, however. Tiffany Trump is a rare participant in official events. Most recently, she sat with her half-brothers, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, as well as half-sister Ivanka Trump, during the State of the Union address in February.
The president’s immediate family is eligible for Secret Service protection while he is in office. That protection includes travel, lodging, and transportation for agents assigned to them. It’s unusual for a sitting US president to have four adult children, especially four adult children with such jet-setting lifestyles. The big taxpayer bills they run up has been criticized by government watchdogs and Democrats, particularly when they’re traveling for Trump Organization business.
An April 2017 business trip to Ireland by Eric Trump cost $4,029.85 in limousines and $11,261 in hotel fees for his Secret Service detail. A February 2017 business trip the two brothers took to the United Arab Emirates cost taxpayers a whopping $230,000. US taxpayers shelled out another $60,000 when Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner traveled to the Dominican Republic on vacation last August.
