First daughter and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump visited Highlands Ranch on Wednesday morning, one day after a deadly school shooting in the Douglas County town.
At a substation next to the Highlands Ranch STEM School, Trump met with Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock and several deputies who responded to the shooting. They spoke for about 20 to 30 minutes in the mid-morning, according to the White House.
“She was very gracious with her time, and those that were there were very appreciative,” said Deputy Cocha Heyden with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. “She was kind and spoke very highly of law enforcement and her family’s respect for us.”
The purpose of her trip was to express support and appreciation to local law enforcement. In turn, the sheriff’s office expressed their appreciation for the assistance they’ve received from federal law enforcement since the Tuesday shooting that left one student dead and eight injured.
At the end of the meeting, Trump asked the officers to take part in a moment of prayer. A chaplain at the sheriff’s office led a prayer for the victims, their families and the community, asking for God’s comfort and healing, according to the White House.
Trump was originally scheduled to visit a Lockheed Martin facility in Littleton on Wednesday morning to discuss workforce development. After the deadly shooting occurred just miles away, the White House and Lockheed Martin said Tuesday night that Trump would not be visiting.
But it now appears the first daughter flew into Denver on Wednesday morning after all, and left soon after.
“No child should know the horror of what students at STEM School Highlands Ranch experienced today,” she said on Twitter on Tuesday. “America mourns with the victims’ families and prays for the welfare of those injured.”
Her father, President Donald Trump, said on Twitter Wednesday that he remains in close contact with Colorado law enforcement. He called the shooting “unspeakable violence.”
