Ivanka Trump's sartorial choices have been called out for cultural appropriation and insensitivity in the past, however, her latest look has people talking for a whole different reason: On Friday, the First Daughter was spotted wearing a pantsuit created by a designer that has not only criticized her father, but refused to dress her mother-in-law, Melania Trump.
The 37-year-old attended an Argentine gala on Friday outfitted in an ivory blazer ($1,995; net-a-porter.com) and trousers ($995; net-a-porter.com) by Gabriela Hearst, an ardent critic of the Trump administration, as CNN's Kate Bennett noted on Twitter.
The fashion designer has specifically called out Trump’s immigration policies as well as his desire to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2017, she even designed a $699 wool sweater that cheekily featured a ram-inspired graphic of the female ovaries; a portion of the proceeds went directly to the organization.
Her criticism of the administration has extended to the First Lady as well. Back in 2017, Hearst told The Wall Street Journal, “If they want to wear the clothes, they can buy the clothes,” while discussing whether she would ever dress Melania. The womenswear designer is far from alone in sharing this viewpoint, standing by fellow liberal designers like Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, and Sophie Theallet who have said they would decline to dress FLOTUS if asked. (While the First Family buys most of their own clothes, it's not uncommon for designers to lend a gown or special occasion outfit for high-profile events.)
