It’s informally known as the First Daughters Club. It’s one of the most selective clubs on Earth, given that its 16 living members — including Chelsea Clinton, Jenna Bush Hager, Barbara Bush and Ivanka Trump — are the daughters of U.S. presidents. These women understand the unique and difficult experience of living in the global spotlight. In recent years of intensified news coverage, the more social media-savvy of the group have become publicly protective of how younger first children, including Barron Trump, are being covered.
In November 2017, the sisterhood sprung into action after reports spread about how Malia Obama, then 19, was spending her free time since starting college at Harvard University, the Economic Times reported.
After photos and videos emerged that claimed to show Malia Obama kissing a boy and blowing smoke rings, Ivanka Trump transcended the partisan politics that usually divide President Donald Trump’s supporters and those of Barack Obama and tweeted: “Malia Obama should be allowed the same privacy as her school aged peers. She is a young adult and private citizen, and should be OFF limits.”
Chelsea Clinton echoed that view, tweeting that the private life of the 44th president’s oldest daughter “should not be your clickbait.”
Over Presidents Day weekend, Malia Obama once again became the subject of two separate tabloid reports in the Daily Mail. The first report alleged that she had kept a secret Facebook page — more on that later. The second report came with photos that purported to show her enjoying a “wild girls-only weekend.” Chelsea Clinton and Nancy Northup during a SiriusXM interview on September 2018. Actually, the “wild” weekend consisted of Malia Obama poolside at a Miami resort, holding a bottle of rosé that she shared with friends.
Some blasted the 20-year-old for enjoying a reportedly pricey, $80 bottle of wine while also being a few months shy of being legal to drink. Conservative talk-show host Andrew Wilkow tweeted, “Living like the 1%? Drinking underage? Let’s see the #democrats and media scream about ‘privilege” here …”
